DESCRIPTION: Approximate body length - Males 12 - 15mm, Females 17 - 22mm.  Another black and yellow Tiger Crane-Fly this time told apart from its near relatives by the heart-shaped black mark on the back of the head, glossy black marks on the yellow thorax, the yellow abdomen with black line along the back, the very dark stigma on the wing and the rounded cerci.  Care needs to be taken with the final ID though and a complete combination of the aforementioned characters is needed. BEHAVIOUR: The larvae are best found in damp soils usually with a good covering of rotting leaf litter. DISTRIBUTION: Loosely distributed throughout Britain. HABITAT: Along river corridors and surrounding vegetation. PERIOD: May to August.
